The reality is that the US has, since the end of WWII, been one the primary drivers against colonialism. We destroyed the German and Japanese empires.. We also defeated the Russian (soviet) empire. Additionally, as far back as the Monroe Doctrine, we confronted colonialism in the New World by Britain, Spain, and France. American foreign policy has literally reshaped the known world. But we gain no credit for that.. ;0)

We also forced the British and French to give up their colonies (with the minor mistake, later badly resolved, called French Indo-China).

We stopped the French and British from overthrowing Nasser in 1956 and reclaiming the Suez Canal.

But do to the nature of the cold war, we sided with authoritarian gov't, perceiving them as the lesser of two evils (the other being communism).

That said, I'm not so sure that Obama isn't merely a political opportunist who saw the path to power via the socialist elite that backed him, only to now seemingly be "jumping ship".

He was a political nobody less than 10 years ago, so it's clear that he had powerful backers who have certain expectations from him The question is whether he will throw them under the bus if he's re-elected in favor of a new set of friends on wall street etc..

And stuck in the middle are the American people who, once again, lack any credible choice that speaks for them (and please don't tell me Ron Paul does)..
