I would agree that Yahoo is falling behind. I used to use Yahoo as my portal to most internet uses. But look at what has happened:

Yahoo Search engine. dead.

Yahoo mail. Like you said, you cannot use browser back button to navigate. How irritating, and obviously a choice on Yahoo's part. That it their way of forcing you to click on more Yahoo pages. But you cannot force people to take the long way home for long. I remember having a Hotmail account and giving up on it because of this. Still I use Yahoo mail because an id of long use there. Also it seems that maybe Yahoo is better on privacy than is Google. But

Yahoo calendar. Used to use it, but it would not load too often. Now I use google calendar.

Yahoo tv. They stopped providing it. So I migrated to another provider.

Yahoo finance. There is still a lot of spam on the message boards. I suspect that Yahoo is not diligent to eliminate it because a lot of the Finance Tout Sites pay for banner advertisement on the Finance page. there have been a couple of "improvements" in how Yahoo Finance handles portfolios, and every improvement has been lousy.

Yahoo groups. Still okay for now. Seems there is no competition.

Still, I am not sure how to value Yahoo as a company. I would be curious to see statistics on use.
It appears to own pieces of other valuable companies. I see them rather like GM, that made lots of money through their investments in other companies while their core business was dying out. They could still turn it around by creating utility for their users, but that has not been their focus for some time, and doubtful it is that it will change. So I would not invest in it.
