so far I see BPL, MMP and PAA. Trying to get a list but no one seems to want to disclose one. Let us just say that reporting likely will no longer be left up to owner of the shares/units.

Generally, O&G E&Ps such as BBEP, ENP and VNR will have high (usually very high) positive UBTI. As to LINE, I have not run across anyone who can fathom why/how they never follow suit and some of those folks are very MLP UBTI wise. Since I never hold MLPs in IRAs, I have not bothered to engage my CPA to unravel LINE's mysteries.

OTOH, the pipes seem to typically have negative UBTI, so if you are gonna take the chance of holding MLPs in your IRA, then a quick and dirty rule of thumb would be to stick to the G&Ps and avoid the E&Ps. This of course is by no means a guaranteed approach.
