and their 30% cut meant that the publishers would get even less money from Apple than Amazon

How do you arrive at that conclusion? Do you have information about how much Amazon pays the publisher? I figure the trade discount on ebooks would be somewhere in the 30% region anyway -- dunno for sure, just guessing here. If that were true, the publisher gets the same amount from both resellers. Only difference is Amazon is selling at a loss.
