From what I understand ~50% yield is yield-to-maturity. The coupon is 5% and the price is ~70 right now, so it's not current yield. And there's only a single coupon left on 8/1/2012. So really the ~50% yield comes from the coupon + expectation that the bond is redeemed at par on 02/01/2013.

Whether it's a great value, depends on the probabilities of GMXR going bust by the maturity date. If you assume over 80% chance of GMXR surviving, then it's an OK deal. Otherwise, not really. :) In either case better than prefs... :)

I think I'll pass though.
