Laz do you mind listing some of the nuttier beliefs you can PM me if you do not want to post. I am curious as I find their underwear idea nutty, I heard that the male priests can choose which women in the family to call to heaven, men are the boss of the family, they shun all people that fall off the wagon, priest used to anoint the bride din the temple during the consummation of the marriage, etc. I do not know I what I just posted has any validity just curious.

Looking at the rise of Mormonism during beginning of the great revivalist movement in the US of 1820's up in rural upstate New York called "The Second Great Awakening" Joseph Smith lived Dec1805 – June 1844 up in Vermont but his family moves down to the "burned over district" when he was about 12yrs, which is right in the center of this American Revivalist movement .

Here you have whole towns meeting down by the river , people feel the "Lord" coming & the Holy Ghost is hiding everywhere behind every rock & tree which this entire region gets caught up in this mania . Where preachers & "charmed ones" were springing up like chipmonks much like what would be found in Biblical times around the time of John the Baptist & everyone not wanting to be left out gets swept up in this rapturist hysteria which Joseph Smith feels right at home in & jumps right in with his made up fictions, plagiarized Bible imitation & fantastical "wonder stories" . People in 1820 not very sophisticated were buying into anything given their immortal souls were on the line , always a good hook that one .

Whats interesting about this time especially up in that area of the US which was experiencing this massive religious movement made up of many common people & slaves , note the chart , an exponential growth of off~shoot denominational sects start exploding in the US out of this time of intense revivalism & preparation for the Second Coming . And all this revivalism moves on out into the frontiers becoming a spreading "camp meeting" phenomenon and really doesn't die down until the turn of the 20th century when it peaks with the great Revival Tent circuits.

Very interesting , this period you see an exponential growth of offshoots of Christianity & the birth of Mormons and of course were all still waiting for the second coming still ;o)

"Second Great Awakening"
en.wikipedia.org

The Second Great AWAKENING was a Christian revival movement during the early 19th century in the United States. The movement began around 1800, had begun to gain momentum by 1820, and was in decline by 1870. [1] The Second Great AWAKENING expressed Arminian theology, by which every person could be saved through revivals. It enrolled millions of new members, and led to the formation of new denominations. Many converts believed that the AWAKENING heralded a new millennial age. The Second Great AWAKENING stimulated the establishment of many reform movements designed to remedy the evils of society before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. [2]

When one reads Book of Mormon now , nothing can be clearer that this is anything more than some young man of that 1820's revivalist era simply paraphrasing the earlier Biblical text in some semi literate cartoonish prose of a charmed 18th century kid in rural "god fearin" USA . He is visited by an Angel named after a pirate city in Madagascar , has these magic "seeing stones" that lead him to treasure & by burying his head in his hat with the seeing-stones , the Book of Mormon is revealed to him ... he is arrested & jailed at one point for using these seeing stones to find treasure , just as he's caught plagiarizing the King James Bible .

The outlandish notions , dreamed up names & off shoot stories of this imagined history , just like the similar old Testament ramblings are too numerous to mention nor is it worth the time but one of these Smith taught was the Native Americans were a lost tribe of Israel .

Note: Founder Joseph Smith later led his group of Mormons to settle in Illinois swamps where they pretty much ran things with a large vigilante force but when some who defected from his preaching and started a local Newspaper criticising him , especially for trying to seduce other men's wives & having several wives of his own . Smith quickly got his people together to vote the printing press be destroyed ,this later led to his arrest by outside authorities & later he was killed in jail by an angry mob .

You have to watch this video terriby funny how easily disproved such idiotic made up "revelations" above which were taken as truth just 2 centuries ago , that blackmen could not enter heaven unless slaves , which Planet God lives on & how the men get their own planets after they die .
