I do see the damage drug USE does though ... and it's not just to the users. There are three elements of the drug use damage that are extremely disturbing to me -- a) Young predominantly black teens walking around city neighborhoods with guns, killing each other and a lot of innocent people, over drug turf and just on general principle. This, more than anything, supports the cause of across-the-board legalization IMO. b) Thousands of kids (and adults) locked up and basically getting no chance at a reasonable life because of stupid stuff they did in pursuit of their drug lifestyles. My friend is an accountant who has been productive for years, but due to addiction was put in prison by an overzealous law enforcement system. She'll never work again. Far better to have let her walk and continue living a productive, though addicted, life. c) We are blowing perhaps $100 Billion a year on chasing down and locking up drug criminals yet we have the worst drug problem of any industrialized nation. It simply isn't working. My belief is that a competent analysis of the system, free of political predetermination, could yield a system where we actually reduce substance abuse and allow people who screw up early in life to get back on track, which believe it or not, could happen if it were treated as a medical problem rather than a law enforcement problem. A friend tells me the story of his nephew, who was so addicted nothing else would do but to put him in prison; otherwise he would steal people blind to get drug money. Well, there are other ways of dealing with it that are more productive if people just wouldn't write these kids off.
