Put the cartridges in a sealed plastic bag.
That will keep them from drying out.

Typically the only cartridges one has "opened" are the ones in your printer and if run until totally out of ink then they will be "Dry" and the internal felts/filler used to absorb and hold the ink becomes dry and rewetting them with new ink during a refill will never approach the original capacity. Indeed sometimes you can barely get the cartridge to absorb anything.

Since any mutli ink single cartridge, such as most HPs, hold very little ink of one color in the first place ... you need all the holding power available.

Another thing that's important on seldom used printers, is to once a week print a page of BW text as well as a small sized color wheel to keep the colors primed.
