The government never does anything right, but it seems to me that the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) should be dealt with separately rather than being combined with the highway bill.

Also you mentioned, Plum Creek and other grant holders are being supportive, but wanting to sell land they have already logged back to the government isn't surprising. As for the management side, the case you made makes some sense, but I would like to see the government offset land purchases with land sales to achieve the consolidation goals you stated. Perhaps and quite likely, land sales wouldn't provide all the funds needed, but it's the type of thinking government needs rather than just throwing money at what it wants.

There is and has been an ongoing push by govt to acquire more and more private land, and it has neither the money or the manpower to properly manage the amount of land it owns now. The federal government is in the process of creating first rights of refusal on all private land bordering the Olympic National Forest.

Why?

So they can control and regulate how many people can access these wild lands. How they can use them. Where people can and cannot move within these lands and how water will be utilized and distributed. This is a power grab with historical implications. If we the people continue to allow this to take place we will lose even more control over our lands.

Thankfully, concerned citizens have become aware and very active. Those people are not going to give up their birthright without a mighty struggle.

The Socialists will use this very issue against Mitt Romney in the run-up. Mitt Romney doesn't have a clue.
