The first wives of two of my buddies, divorced them because they wouldn't have kids and remarried other men and had kids with them. I don't have siblings, but all my buddies did.

>>>. The Amish, whom everyone mocks, have high birth rates. The average family has 6-7 children <<

Same is true about Orthodox Jews, both in Israel and in the US - their numbers are increasing. The secular Jewish population is declining, just like with most Westerners. The fertility of Iranian women crashes from about 8 kids per woman down to the same levels as in most of Europe - the decisive factor happens to be (simple?) literacy. As soon as they learn how to read, those girls no longer want to have crowds of babies. (I suspect that's why the Mullahs kicked out the Shah - for his tendencies towards westernizing the nation).

Spartans (and, in part Romans) got finished off because they became too affluent and didn't want to divide their estates among too many children - because of fear that the family may not retain its importance.

Those and many other things are discussed by David Goldman (Spengler) in his recent book "How Civilizations Die". It's a fun and worthwhile read.
