Spartans (and, in part Romans) got finished off because they became too affluent and didn't want to divide their estates among too many children - because of fear that the family may not retain its importance. Those and many other things are discussed by David Goldman (Spengler) in his recent book "How Civilizations Die". It's a fun and worthwhile read.
