Instead, I would have kicked those countries out of the EU and that would have freed countries like Greece up to print their own currency and to default on their unpayable loans. What you propose is bordering on insanity. It would be the equivalent of kicking out Nevada or Michigan at the nadir of the recession because they were doing so badly. The EU is not too unlike our republic.........member states that have some autonomy but are committed to a central gov't with one currency. If you broke up the US, there would be economic ramifications that would resonate throughout the world and might cause unknown econ. chaos. Same with the EU.
