That's one of the nicer things about science... it's self-correcting.

False or inaccurate theories (there are many!) do not stand the test of time.

Theories are modified and/or replaced all the time....

If someone calls a press conference and announces some 'break-through experimental results' no one in the science community really commits to it *until* MANY other science teams have been able to replicate the results themselves.

And, although 'theories' are many and various (from the utterly wild to the tame), they don't make it into the realm of "conventional wisdom" until they have successful experimental results replicated many, many times... and not unless they actually provide some utility, produce some benefit that would not otherwise the available to us in the absence of that theory's pragmatic explication of some natural phenomena or condition.
