In the future all cars will be electric and will pick up their charge from the roadway through their tires. The roadways will be supplied by nuclear fusion generators.

Eventually, in a thousand years, most roadway traffic will be non vehicular. The roadway itself will move and do so differentially across its width, Clarke's anisotropic matter roadway. You simply step on the roadway and away you go with your junk sitting on the roadway next to you. Off road vehicles will be around and they'll be battery powered.

In 5,000 years the anisotropic roadways will be around, but they won't carry much traffic. Off road will be strictly airborne probably powered by the inertia cancelling gravity drive. Mankind will be out in the galaxy squatting and polluting, and no one will pick up one piece of trash.
