That's not that bad an idea. Getting an incentive to hire someone at a reduced rate, then paying him more if he worked out.

If things went so south that I had to get a menial job to eat, at my age, I would offer to work for nothing for a couple of weeks, then off the books, if that's what it took to get a job.

People get very unrealistic. "Well, I was making so and so, and I won't take a new job for a penny less!" Used to hear this all the time when I was in the employment business.
