"people claim there is a GAIA"

My list could have been almost endless. I think one gets the picture. Fairies and witches were believed in by Christians and still are.

GAIA has also been discussed endlessy by rebel Christians. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's conception of the noosphere is not much different than Gaia. At least he was a trained scientist and tried to put his beliefs in a scientific framework. But Evolution on his conceptual level requires assumptions that Science is unable and unentitled to make--so his ideas remain an interesting alternative to Lord of the Rings.
