I agree, the higher the DEET % the better (when it melts a plastic bag). Diesel fuel on your pants cuffs works well to keep the pesky little devils from crawling up your legs. Blackflies will last about a month, then the skeeters will be out for their once of blood<g>.
Tried "skin so soft" a few years back, had no luck with it.
