No, unfortunately, their government's credit rating is probably higher and their currency less likely to lose purchasing value.

So why is considered to be so valuable.....do we burn it? Do we use it in commercial products on a large scale...no, it's just a nice shiny metal that is attractive to many people as jewelry...

Because governments can't inflate the supply of gold at will. As a commodity it's a hedge against inflation. Bring down inflation expectations and gold could fall. The opposite has been happening over the past few years.
