I am fine with removing tax breaks for all energy producers and letting them compete in a free market. I don't have a particular beef with oil companies, and realize they generate a lot of wealth and taxes, but since they are so financially sound, I think giving them any tax breaks is crazy. Those tax breaks were put in place decades ago to encourage development when oil prices were much lower. Their purposes has long since evaporated, but like most government incentives and programs, they live on long past the time when they were sound policy and served a useful purpose.
