Tokyo Nikkei climbs 2.70 pct by midday
09:44 p.m Nov 30, 1997 Eastern
TOKYO, Dec 1 (Reuters) - The Tokyo stock market's main index ended the
Monday morning session over two percent higher, reflecting investors'
relief that relentless selling of financial sector shares seemed to be
abating, brokers said.

They said repeated reassurances that the government was determined to
stabilise the financial system and comments by the prime minister that
the use of public funds to protect depositors was being contemplated
spurred short-covering.

The Nikkei average rose above the 17,000 line for the first time in over
a month, standing at 17,085.91, up 449.65 points or 2.70 percent, at
midday.

''The wait-and-see mood is strong, but financial sector issues revived,
boosting the index,'' a broker at a medium-sized brokerage said. ''It
seems that the government is getting serious about the use of public
funds and the market is sighing with relief.''
