SHEAR Visit msnbc.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy 8:55 p.m. | Updated Mitt Romney declared that he had accomplished a sweep of five states Tuesday night and laid claim to the Republican presidential nomination after what he said were 43 primaries and caucuses and “many long nights.” “I can say with confidence and gratitude that you have given me a great honor and solemn responsibility, and together, we are going to win on November 6,” he said. Speaking to those frustrated by the economy, he said: “Hold on a little longer, a better America begins tonight.” Making it clear that he intends to campaign vigorously against President Obama , Mr. Romney said: “tonight is the start of a new campaign” and then added: “tonight is the beginning of the end of the disappointment of the Obama years.” Mr. Romney won primaries in Rhode Island and Connecticut , according to the Associated Press, giving the presumed nominee early victories in an evening expected to cement his status as the party’s new standard-bearer. NBC News also declared Mr. Romney the winner in Pennsylvania . The Associated Press also declared Mr. Romney the victor in Delaware , a state that Newt Gingrich had said would be a critical state for him as looks to continue his battle with Mr. Romney all the way to the Republican National Convention in Tampa this summer. The results in New York had not been called by news organizations yet. Mr. Romney sought to reintroduce himself Tuesday night as the nation begins to tune into the general election competition. He described his father growing up poor and failing to graduate from college before becoming a car executive and governor. “You might have heard that I was successful in business. And that rumor is true,” he said. “You might not have heard that our business helped start other businesses, like Staples and Sports Authority and a new steel mill and a learning center called Bright Horizons.” He added: “After 25 years, I know how to lead us out of this stagnant Obama economy and into a job-creating recovery.” But he spent most of his time criticizing the president’s economic policies and put forth what he said was a different vision for American — an American that is “fundamentally fair,” he said. “In the America I see, character and choices matter. And education, hard work, and living within our means are valued and rewarded,” he said. “And poverty will be defeated, not with a government check, but with respect and achievement that is taught by parents, learned in school, and practiced in the workplace.” “Because he has failed, he will run a campaign of diversions, distractions, and distortions,” Mr. Romney said. “That kind of campaign may have worked at another place and in a different time. But not here and not now. It’s still about the economy … and we’re not stupid.”
