Carl: The wilshire 5000 is supposed to refelct 95% of the total market capitalization, or about 9 trillions.

Carl, S&P500 supposedly gives 70 +/-5% of total market cap, at least back to 50's, when it was S&P400.
Another question is what is the quality of these cash flows, and how were they affected by accounting rule changes over the years.
Also, the ratio of public/private Cos. changed, probably from 1 to ~1.5 over these years.
