Good post, Larry.

CRN: You mentioned 3Com. Earlier this year, IBM and 3Com announced a strategic networking alliance. Where is that going?

McGee:We have had a long-standing relationship with 3Com for a number of years, specifically on the high-end switch, and we have continual discussions with 3Com about how our partnership is going, and what we should do next, and what we should do with our mutual customers to help each business out.

One of the things we were specifically interested in was making some progress on the high-end switch and getting that more established in the marketplace. 3Com had a need to make some progress on their high-end switch so we centered discussions around that, and we ended up with an agreement that we are going to use their Ethernet technology and they are going to use our ATM technology, and we are going to go build our respective products. . . .

CRN:As you form more partnerships, what complications do you see?

McGee:Well, it is certainly easier to manage fewer partnerships than many partnerships.

To repeat, it would appear that tonight's IBM-ASND rumor is local yore, with now substance or basis in reality.

As an aside, they just won't let token ring go, will they? Oh well, I guess it's just a little annuity.
