Totally agree with you metaphor. The question then becomes what kind of stimulus is our government providing? Are they spending money on things that have no return on investment or are they spending money on things that do?

Things that I think have a long term ROI:
* Education
* Free contraception for men and women
* Alternative energy (natural gas, solar, wind, nuclear)
* Extending the reach of the Internet to all citizens
* Prosecuting criminals
* Safeguarding our Constitutional rights
* Investments in Universities, Gov't organizations, and private enterprise to drive more research and development into Science and Technology
* Investments in space exploration for the purposes of colonizing other planets and mining the natural resources beyond Earth
* Finding a path to citizenship for the 20 million immigrants in this country and eliminating limits on H-1 Visas
* Ending our role as world policeman

Things that have no long term ROI, but feel great in the short term:
* Giving money to rich people in the form of zero percent interest rates to a select group of people, but not to everyone else
* Lower taxes on rich people
* Quantitative easing that increases the value of the stock market for the 1%, but lowers the value of the dollar relative to the goods the 99% purchase every day
* the Fed buying toxic assets from banks at full face value when their market value is 80% less than face value
* spending 75% more than our gov't raises in tax revenues
* 80% of health care expenses going to the 5% unhealthy people in this country
* Endless wars and nation building in other countries
* Massive government spending on Homeland Security, so we can be strip searched in airports and our goods seized
* Spying on American citizens with no court order
