Caterpillar’s strong first-quarter earnings report was mitigated somewhat by the company’s admission that sales in China had fallen off “significantly” as construction in that country slowed. However, company executives noted that, while growing in importance, China remains a very small part of Caterpillar’s overall business, and growth in the U.S. more than made up for the slowing.
