First, I was in Congo, Brazzaville, not the Democratic Progressive Peoples' Socialist Marxist Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire).

Second, I left in 1991 ... and things on both sides of the river were fairly calm then.

The worst I ever heard as far as anyone in our embassy being victimized was one attempt to break in an American residence, which was unsuccessful, and one person who fronted money to a local to buy African art ... and of course was deservedly ripped off.

Things got bad on both sides of the river (Congo and Zaire) a few months after I left.

The worst problem in the country was AIDS.
