Vacation backlash: Blue collar Dems jealous, angry at Obamas

Blue collar Democratic voters, stuck taking depressing “staycations” because they can’t afford gas and hotels, are resentful of the first family’s 17 lavish vacations around the world and don’t want their tax dollars paying for the Obamas’ holidays, according to a new analysis of swing voters.

“They view everything through their own personal situation and if they can’t afford to do it, they can’t enjoy it, they don’t like Obama using their tax dollars to benefit himself,” said pollster John McLaughlin. “In this case, they see him as out of touch. While they are struggling he’s not sharing in that struggle and he’s basically doing what they can’t do on their tax dollars,” added the GOP pollster.

He and several other top-tier Republican pollsters, organized by Resurgent Republic, traveled to 11 battleground states to host focus groups of independent and swing voters, mostly Democrats, who voted for President Obama in 2008 but who are now on the fence.

McLaughlin handled blue collar and Catholic voters in Pittsburgh on April 3 and Cleveland on March 20. He found that they are very depressed about the economy and feel that their tax dollars are being sucked up by both the rich and those living on government assistance.

During the focus group discussions about debt and spending cuts, many in his group volunteered criticism of the presidential vacations as something that should be cut. Among the lines McLaughlin wrote down was one from a Democratic woman who said, “Michelle Obama spends $1 million to take the kids to Hawaii,” and another who said, “President Obama was the only president to take so many trips.”

The theme, said McLaughlin, is that the first family “is out of touch” with working class voters.

He added that the president’s attack on the rich and GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney’s wealth is working, but the voters were also lumping in the president’s vacation spending in with the General Services Administration’s Las Vegas scandal and federal spending for those who aren’t looking for work.

“There really wasn’t a real dislike for Romney. It was just that he is too rich. But on the other hand there is a start of resentment of the government,” he said. “What surprised me is that these were Democrats back biting on their own president,” added McLaughlin.

(Reuters) - The campaign aide who wrote a tell-all book about efforts to hide former U.S. Senator John Edwards' pregnant mistress testified on Wednesday about his ex-boss' response when the aide threatened to expose him during a final, contentious encounter. "You can't hurt me, Andrew," Edwards said, according to testimony by aide Andrew Young. "You can't hurt me."

Young, the key government witness in the federal campaign finance prosecution of Edwards, said the conversation took place in August 2008 on a country road in North Carolina near the former senator's home. The aide and his family had spent months on the run helping to shield Edwards' mistress, Rielle Hunter, from the media.

At Edwards' request, the married Young had falsely claimed paternity of Hunter's child and solicited more than $900,000 from two wealthy donors to conceal the affair and pregnancy and avoid destroying Edwards' campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, Young said.

But as they sat in an SUV off the road, Edwards denied knowing anything about the payments, according to Young.

"He was very nervous, and he was sweating," Young testified. "He was acting very oddly. It was surreal."

Edwards, 58, faces possible prison time if convicted of federal election law violations, including charges of conspiracy, accepting illegal campaign contributions and making false statements.

Prosecutors finished questioning Young on Wednesday. In their cross-examination, Edwards' attorneys are likely to attack Young's character and credibility. Already, Young has admitted there are falsehoods in his 2010 book, "The Politician," about Edwards and the plot to cover up the affair with Hunter.

Edwards, a two-time presidential hopeful who was the Democrats' vice presidential nominee in 2004, shook his head at times during Young's testimony. The two men were once close; prosecutors played voicemail recordings on Wednesday in which Edwards told Young that he loved him.

Young said one of the wealthy donors, Fred Baron, told him his role in helping to conceal Hunter and the baby from the public was crucial to Edwards' political future as a possible vice presidential nominee.

ELABORATE COVERUP

Edwards, then a married father of three, had repeatedly denied reports that he was cheating on his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth, who died in 2010.

Young and his family traveled with Hunter to luxury locations in Florida, Colorado and California, riding in private jets and staying at fancy hotels and homes paid for by Baron. Young said Hunter, who gave birth to a daughter in February 2008, used the assumed name Jaya James.

Hunter for a time had worked as a videographer for Edwards' campaign but lost her job after Elizabeth Edwards found out about the affair, Young said.

Young said he went along with the plan to get money from Baron and heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon because he believed John Edwards should be president. After Edwards dropped out of the race, Young still hoped to get a job at a foundation Edwards wanted to create to tackle poverty issues.

But he grew angry when Edwards refused to come clean about fathering a child with Hunter and clear Young's name. Young said his reputation was badly damaged, hurting his chances for future employment.

At his final meeting with Edwards, Young said he threatened to reveal the truth if Edwards didn't do it himself.

In May 2011, the government granted Young immunity from prosecution in exchange for his cooperation and truthful testimony. Edwards was indicted in June.

How 1 brutal crime begets another

Jeff Knox says cycle of fear must stop before more Trayvons die
by Jeff Knox
Friday, April 27, 2012
wnd.com

Why do tragedies like the death of Trayvon Martin occur? Because atrocities like the murder of Nancy Strait occur.

Nancy Strait was 85 years old, mostly blind, and had been caring for her 90-year-old husband Bob for over 65 years, when she was brutally raped and murdered. A suspect named Tyrone Woodfork, who turned 20 a few days after the attack, has been arrested, and accomplices are being sought.

Police say that Woodfork and up to four accomplices broke into Mr. and Mrs. Strait’s Tulsa, Okla., home during the overnight hours of Tuesday, March 13. They beat Bob, breaking ribs and his jaw, and shot him several times in the face with a BB-gun. They also beat and sexually assaulted Nancy. The couple was not found until the following evening. Bob survived, though he is not expected to hang on much longer. Nancy succumbed to her injuries a day later.

Police say Woodfork was captured after an alert citizen spotted the Strait’s stolen car and police questioned the driver. They were also able to track down the couple’s TV, which they say Woodfork had sold at a local gas station for $250. Woodfork’s accomplices remain at large more than a month after the crime.

The Strait family has set up a fund to help pay medical and funeral expenses, while the couple’s Tulsa neighbors have organized a neighborhood watch program. The neighbors are reasonably concerned about the fact that anyone could or would perpetrate such a heinous crime against such a defenseless and harmless couple who had little worth stealing.

It was just such a neighborhood watch program that George Zimmerman was involved in when he fatally shot Trayvon Martin. Typically these programs stress that the volunteer “watchers” are to be eyes and ears for the police – observing and reporting, not chasing or apprehending – but when you read about heartless, soulless bastards like those that attacked Bob and Nancy Strait, who could blame a neighborhood watch volunteer for tucking a little personal protection behind their belt – just in case?

That’s what George Zimmerman says he did. He says he wasn’t trying to apprehend or challenge Martin, but was trying to see where he had disappeared to when the police dispatcher told him, “We don’t need you to do that.”

He says he complied and was on his way back to his car when Martin jumped him and began bashing his head into the concrete sidewalk. Recently released pictures of Zimmerman’s bloody scalp support his assertion that he was in fear for his life when he pulled out his “just in case” gun and pulled the trigger.

Were Zimmerman’s actions reasonable? Was Martin’s race a factor in Zimmerman’s suspicion? Did the fact that he had the gun on him embolden Zimmerman to cross the line from “watcher” to self-appointed “enforcer?”

We don’t know, and neither do Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson or the media pundits. What we do know is that atrocities like the one that befell Bob and Nancy Strait do happen and they do scare us. We know that such crimes are relatively unusual and unlikely to happen to us or our neighbors. But we also know that the odds of winning a $100 million PowerBall Jackpot are 1 in 175 million, and we still buy a ticket.

It is wrong to assume that because the alleged murderer of Nancy Strait was a young black man, any young black man is a threat, just as it is wrong to assume that anyone who is suspicious of a young black man is only suspicious because he is black. It would also be wrong to assume that because George Zimmerman was involved in a neighborhood watch program and had a concealed carry permit, anyone who participates in neighborhood watch or has a carry permit is a vigilante looking for trouble. But it is human nature to tend to conflate our experiences and jump to conclusions. It is well to recognize that inclination and fight it.

Why do tragedies like the killing of Trayvon Martin happen? Because of atrocities like what happened to Bob and Nancy Strait. It all feeds in a cycle of fear and mistrust that is exacerbated by people trying to sell newspapers and people who profit from the fear – including the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and, yes, the self-defense community.

Everyone needs to tone down the rhetoric and knee-jerk reactions and focus on practical solutions to poverty, hopelessness, a revolving door “justice” system and destructive cultures of greed and mistrust – while preserving and protecting our ability to prepare for the worst. Meanwhile, we can mourn with the families of Trayvon Martin and the Straits, and we can try to teach our children to be cautious without being irrational.

The attack on Bob and Nancy Strait is all the more tragic because they were among the last and best of what we have come to refer to as “the greatest generation.” After surviving the Great Depression, Nancy had left her small town home to go to the big city of Tulsa to work in a factory supporting the war effort. Bob was serving in the 101st Airborne Division and participated in the D-Day invasion. Though he was wounded, he turned down a Purple Heart because he didn’t feel his injuries warranted the citation. And even though he was eligible for VA medical care and other veterans’ benefits, he never took advantage of them because he felt that he had just done his job and his duty and didn’t think further compensation was warranted. To this day Bob’s family can’t convince him to accept the government assistance he earned in WWII.

Nancy and Bob Strait

These were great people, and it is heartbreaking that their last days were cut short by cowardly little thugs. An assistance fund has been set up to help with medical expenses. Anyone wishing to contribute can send checks to: Bob Strait Support Trust, c/o Arvest Bank, 502 S. Main St., Tulsa, OK 74103. Be sure to include “Bob Strait Fund” on the Memo line of the check.

We need change.

The US grew at disappointing annualised rate of 2.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2012 as a large fall in government spending knocked 0.6 percentage points off the total.

That figure was well behind market expectations of 2.7 per cent...

Dalai Lama Shocks CNN Host: I LOVE GEORGE BUSH

Watch below as CNN’s Piers Morgan is stunned when the Dalai Lama says he loves George W. Bush.

I think Morgan was expecting him to name The One instead…

I can think of two good reasons why the Dalai Lama would love George W. Bush.

He did more for AIDS victims in Africa than well… anyone ever.

And unlike Obama, he never made the Dalai Lama leave the White House through the service exit by the trash…

Congressman Makes Fool of Clueless Sebelius Over Free Birth Control Rule
Thursday, April 26, 2012, 8:29 PM
Wesley J. Smith
The Obamacarians don’t care much about the U.S. Constitution. Now, we have the Secretary of Health and Human Services admitting she didn’t even consider the constitutionality of imposing the “free birth control” rule, nor obtain a legal memo on the legal mandate she imposed Catholic institutions, that will fine them if they refuse to violate their own religious beliefs. Ideology over constitutionality. That seems to be the Obamacare Rule! And Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) is right, it will end up in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Death of the Moderate . . . Democrat

It is worth noting that on Tuesday several moderate Democrats went down in flames in Pennsylvania, continuing a trend that has escalated since 2008. Liberals do not want moderate Democrats in their caucus.

What is most interesting about it from a conservative perspective, however, is how there has not been a ton of coverage about the death of the blue dogs — more dogs dead in Barack Obama and the left’s war on dogs. Had moderate Republicans been defeated, we would have major stories on pretty much every news network and on the front page of every paper in America.

Routinely we hear that Republicans cannot win in New England, despite Republican successes in New England in 2010. Routinely we hear about the GOP driving moderates out of the party. Big tent cliches surround the stories. Rarely does the ongoing purging of the Democratic Party make such news.

In fact, the Democratic Party has become increasingly hostile to moderates, though the media rarely cares to focus on this because the reporters who’d pay attention often are to the left of the moderate Democrats and proclaim their position the center. Those moderate Democrats are, therefore, well outside the mainstream.

I do not lament the decline and fall of the Blue Dog Coalition. The United States remains a center-right nation and Democrats must continue to run as “centrist” to appeal in swing states. Their true colors ruin their chances. The fewer “centrists” they have, the more difficult it becomes for them to appeal to voters, including Hispanic voters who continue to be some of the most socially conservative voters in America.

The lesson, here, though is that partisans in both parties prefer their candidates to stand for something and fight for something. The media’s predominant bias is a good government bias and reporters hail those Republicans and Democrats who work across party lines to get things done in Washington. And what have they done?

We’re at $15 trillion and counting to what they’ve done. But it was done in the name of good government — a concept that is always framed as our salvation and will ultimately be our damnation as we go bankrupt with repeated good government compromises.
