If I do 10 units of work and pay 1 unit of taxes at first then I do 10 more units of work and pay 7 units of taxes, the net benefit of 10 units of work is 3 units of pay. It's the same as getting a pay decrease for the same work. If I work 10 more units of work and pay 10 units of taxes why work at all. If I work 10 units of work and pay 15 units of taxes I guess I should work some more! It's called the Laffer curve.
