Peter & Cliff [DSP]

Tried posting at 3am yesterday, but SI Down.

<Copper Gold vs. C6X> Jim, pls. excuse poss. dumb ? but -- Is the C6X a substitute for CG? If so, I did not realize this, I thought it would be a sep. entity within the modem. Rgds: Cliff

CopperGold is an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)
designed to be used as the central chip in a ADSL DMT single modem.

It runs a fixed program for a specific purpose. There are thousands of ASICs all designed to perform specific functions, from a mired of companies. Like lsilogic.com

A number of other components and Chips make up a modem, CG is the primary chip having one port as in a consumer modem.

TI C6x is a Programmable General Purpose DSP, and can be used for hundreds of different functions. It is designed with multiple ports,
4 ports I believe will be the primary design for now. This means it can handle 4 inbound consumer modems for 1 card slot in a DSLAM Chassis. If you have 12 slots in a single chassis this means the chassis can handle 36 consumer modems. You can have multiple chassis's
in a DSLAM.

If you were to us CG you could handle only 12 consumers per chassis.

Less chips = Less Heat. Plus all consumer modems, and DSLAM DSP's can be upgraded via software with TI's C6x.

TI is currently at least one year ahead of it's current DSP competitors, and should remain there, or continue move ahead of them for at least a few years.

There are some who may argue that point, but it's FAQ as far as my research as led. And now that they have an Amati R&D house and it's
Engineers, I see them keeping their lead.

I pointed to LSI Logic above. LSI was working on a Programmable DSP for Amati and it was my understanding that it would be better than the first batch of the C6x.

Could TI have pulled the Plug on LSI when they bought Amati?

Will TI forge a Strategic Partnership with LSI?

Is it too late, will TI have to buy LSI to protect it's lead?

Amati may have not been capital rich, but they are Engineering Rich!
Both on the Hardware and Software side of DSP. TI got a real bargain,
at our expense.

Give it up TI, I want Stock, not a Capital Gain.

BTW: You might find these sights useful ;^)
