Israel a western country like in Western Civilization?!? Western Civilization and Christian Civilization were basically synonymous terms until very recently. The one unifying core principle of Western/Christian Civilization has always been Christ and Christianity--the Church. The living monuments of this civilization are clearly seen in the beautiful living Christian cathedrals of Europe. The western nations, including European Russia, were mostly primitive barbaric nations before evangelization by the mostly Jewish Apostles and disciples of the first century. The living light of Jesus Christ and the Gospel/New Testament teachings coupled with the moral and ethical foundation of the Old Testament decalog transformed the former barbaric western cultures into what became Western/Christian Civilization. The central themes of the cathedrals of Europe capture the essence of that transformation from barbarism to civilized society. Modern Israel makes a show of the Torah but totally lacks the unifying spirit of the Law and the Prophets---illumination of the Messiah in the Gospels. Modern Israeli society might superficially reflect some of the technological, cultural and social aspects of Western Civilization but they clearly lack the central spiritual life force of Jesus that has illuminated the west for the last 2000 years. Consequently, I have a difficult time calling modern Israel a "western" nation in the true sense of the word western.
