So in my opinion, one would be wise, especially if one is a Christian (as I am), to be very cautious about passing judgment on them." Sorry for taking so long to answer. You stated that "I should not forget that Israel is the "apple of God's eye." The national geographic entity called modern Israel was never the "apple of God's eye." The Torah, the Prophets and the New Testament all serve to make this abundantly clear. First we look at the Torah and we find in the narrative of Abraham and Sarah that Abraham is the father of the ancient Jews or Israel. Although from a superficial reading one might confused the term with race or ethnicity, it was in fact a profoundly spiritual term based on faith, not race. Let's reflect on the narrative for a moment. We are agreed that the ancient Jewish or Israel people came from the Patriarch Abraham because of his faith in God(Genesis says: "Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness). Abraham's first son was Ishmael whose mother was Hagar. Ishmael was 100% the genetic son of Abraham but still he did not inherit the promises of Abraham through faith because he lacked the faith of Abraham. So here we have a full blooded son of Abraham he didn't become part of Israel. Then Abraham sired his second son Isaac supernaturally with Sarah since Sarah was past the age of menopause. In other words, God produced a supernatural egg in Sarah for her to conceive the son of promise and faith. Since Isaac was the son of promise and faith, he was to carry the line through his sons of FAITH, not genetics. The proof of this comes when Isaac's wife Rebekkah conceived and bore twins. These two sons, Jacob and Esau, were 100% the genetic heirs of Abraham and Sarah but only Jacob carried the faith of Abraham and Isaac. Despite the fact that Esau carried the full genetics of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac and Rebekkah, he mysteriously did not inherit their faith. This proves conclusively from the Torah that the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who carried their faith became the true Israel of God (God changed Jacob's name to Israel), a people with the faith of Abraham. Of course Isaac and Jacob also possessed the genetics of Abraham and Sarah but so did Esau. So there was a quality in Abraham that God wanted to expand into a nation but that quality was clearly not genetics otherwise Esau and Ishmael would have become part of the ancient nation of Israel. Jacob had 12 sons. One son named Joseph married an Egyptian and had two sons named Ephraim and Manasseh who were clearly only half of the genetics of Abraham. Jacob blessed these two sons of Joseph and they became part of the people called Jews. So here again we see faith dominating and not genetics. This narrative repeats itself in Rahab the Canaanite from Jericho and then again in Ruth the Moabites who married Boaz and became an ancestor of David and eventually and eventually of Jesus. In Genesis 17.4 God tells Abraham: " As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. St. Paul clarifies all this in the Epistles of Romans and Galatians. Romans 4:13 " For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith." Romans 2:28-29..." 28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: [29] But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. In Galatians 3:27-29..."[27] For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. [29] And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. ------------------------- So there HB, Israel, Zion, Jerusalem are all terms referring to a condition of the heart and not of genetics. If it were of genetic as you claim, then you would have reduced God's salvation to a racial Nazi concept. When the Bible speaks of Israel, it speaks of Israel of the heart. When the bible speaks of Jerusalem, it speaks of Jerusalem of the heart. The thing that made Jerusalem great was first the Shekinah glory (the Holy Spirit) that dwelt in the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies as well as the faith of the Israel people (people of faith) who worshiped the one true God. The people of faith, the true of Israel of God, are the "Apple of God's eye." Peace
