Sounds to me like you got broker's stock to short instead of banker's stock. Broker's stock is liable to be called back in a shorter time period than banker's stock. When you placed the short sale, you should have been informed that this was the case. If this did not happen, I think you should take it up with your broker to make sure this does not happen again. My broker always informs me if there is only broker's stock to borrow, and I usually will not execute a short sale under those conditions.
