Good article. I'm not sure the foundry model is dead but I think it means Intel continues to have an 18 to 24 month advantage over others. Now that they are moving into where the volume is large enough for them to move the needle, smart phones, I would think people who rely on others wonder if they will switch to Intel for future chips.

BTW, it sort of reminds me of reading "Wheels" as a kid about the auto industry and how valuable an engineer was who could save a 1970 US $1 per car by changing the design. When you are selling tens of millions of smart phones, you get a similar savings with ONLY a 1¢ savings on chip costs... I did analog IC and device (optical) design for 20 years at HP and KEY to great products for >90% market share was designing the process AND devices together... If I was Apple's CEO, I'd have my top design engineers desks located on Intel property.... or at least requiring them to have lunch with the Intel engineers weekly.... unless they buy their own fab using overseas cash.... but I bet the engineers overseas still are not equal to what we have in the Silicon Valley.
