Me too. But I have to confess I still look at the number before the SPX. Lifetime of habit... like millions of other people. They should kill the Dow just to protect us from ourselves.

I still sometimes hear people say "The market was up a hundred points," referring to the DJIA. When I worked in places like Salomon Brothers, Deutsche Bank, and Bear Stearns, back in the nineties, all the traders, analysts, and brokers cared only a little about it. They told me to pay attention to the S&P, because it captures a large percentage of the overall value of the market, and is, therefore, much more relevant than the Dow.
