You could also ask whether they need that amount of cash sitting anywhere, and what difference it makes where it is.

It will eventually get spent or returned to shareholders. My guess is that tech companies across the board would have much higher buybacks and dividends if they had access to their current overseas cash balance as well as access to future earnings.

Most likely, Apple (and the rest of tech) will simply outwait the government. If a tax holiday doesnt happen today, it will happen at some point.

If they needed to spend it in the US, it seems to me that bringing it back and spending it would create a write off. So it matters not.
