But it’s hard to empathise with a man with this level of self-absorption. That is the take-away. One gets the impression that Barack Obama worked very hard on the creation of Barack Obama to the neglect of a normal emotional development. It's impressive in a way that he refused to simply join his girlfriend's world, but you get the impression that's because her world would not have provided him a starring role. I was also struck by the fact that Obama clearly believes he is an intellectual, when what he had to say on TS Elliot was a facile but incoherent mashup of scholarly commentary on Elliot. Obama is all about charm and pose; nothing about internal meaning. His one moral guidepost is his inherited Marxism which led him to community organizing.
