Believe me, I certainly am sympathetic with your position that free markets should be free, and I understand your not wanting to bail out the foolhardy, whether they be individuals or institutions. But your argument gets scary when you say that "our polititions" should not let the foolhardy get themselves, and the country into such a position. Just how does the government stop the foolhardy from being foolhardy. Sounds like government regulation to me. Lots of government regulation.

Are you saying that government regulation should prevent a Neiderhoffer from buying all those naked puts? I don't want anyone telling me what securities I can buy and sell.

As usual, these matters of policy are not easy.
