I am not an expert by any means, but how does Japan produce HDDs at such a low cost. Last I heard Japan has to import most of their materials to produce HDDs. If the yen is low in comparison to the US dollar then would that not increase the basic cost of a disk drive due to higher costs of components or raw materials.

The only advantage for the Japanese companies that I can see would be that labor costs and productivity costs (ie electricity, cost of running plants, etc) would be lower.
