Don,

A 233MHz Pentium is certainly plenty of machine. Soooo....

It's either some configuration setup on protocols, some communications black magic I don't understand or, it's the internet loading. I DO notice a difference sometimes - but not a factor of 5 or 10. But, I'm in Colorado, not the coasts.

How about this... try logging on at some God-awful minimum use time like 4 A.M., and see if things are much faster. Also, ask your friends around your area how long it takes them to screen through messages. If things go 5 times faster at 4 A.M., you might want to change servers. One of your friends should be on a server that's quick - and he'll tell you which one he uses.

P.S. If you REALLY want speed, look into cable connections (my area, alas, doesn't provide this but they may in your reqion), or try something radical like Hugh's Direct PC you can get through COMP USA.

Good luck.

Bob.

All,

I think I've reasoned through a tax problem, but would appreciate your advice as a check on my thinking.

Before I bought FTEL, I'd made about $120K in profit on stocks this year, and sold to by a big chunk of FTEL. The last chunk of FTEL I bought was at about $8.00/share. So on my latest buys, I've lost nearly 50 percent of the value (based on latest market price), but the IRS will hold me to the profit. (The buys I made at less than $4 I'll leave alone)

I'm confident in FTEL's long-term prospects, and if it weren't for taxes, I'd be happy to sit back and hold. BUT - December is coming, and if I do nothing I'll pay the IRS taxes on over $40K that I haven't really "earned".

What I think I need to do is sell FTEL, claim the loss, wait out the 30 days needed to make the loss acceptable to the IRS, and then buy again. Murphy's Law says FTEL will rocket from $4 to $10 again in that time ... but, you can never count on Murphy's Law (That's another one of Murphy's Laws. Murphy was, if the legend is true, a WWII Army Air Corps Captain).

So, any thoughts? As a beginning investor, I've got no pride and welcome advice eagerly.

Bob.
