I'm not saying I want the oldsters eating cat food and dumpster diving. I don't want that for the young and poor, and i don't want it for the old and poor. But they don't deserve much more than subsistence, and they ought to be working a lot longer. They're not getting more than subsistence if they are relying solely on the government.

Whew! Have a glass of wine would you--or may be you've already had a glass or two. You're neither Republican or Democrat---you're a REvolutionary! Well, there's much too what you say in terms of putting the money where its needed. A tentative first step would to let the exemption for SSI withholdings above 106K per year expire. That one might be able to gotten thru. Then a second tentative step would be means testing for the benefit, but it would probably take a civil war to get that one thru. There is in terms of health care too much money being spent on the dying. Medicare will shortly have to come to terms with that. If you're over 80 we'll make you comfortable, but not extraordinary means etc. All these issues will be confronting us shortly. Pass the wine please.

That is pretty harsh. I hate to tell you this, but you could post that on any right wing blog and they would say "right on". And the old don't get much more than subsistence now. If you can pay your own way you can retire early- otherwise you work until at least 70. No one "deserves" golden years. That's stupid. Earn them, pay for them yourself, or work longer. I don't believe in entitlements for anyone- not the poor, and not the old. But I do believe in a limited safety net. I don't want people begging in the street, and I want universal care, for selfish reasons, because I don't want diseases spread, and I want people treated early, so they don't get expensive. But I want everything that is done for the profligate or the poor to be sensible, minimal, and all aimed at encouraging folks to work. I work. I expect to work as long as I am able. If I drop dead as a working person, that would suit me, as I have very little respect for layabouts- even old ones. I pay for my own disability in case I can no longer work. I do not expect the government to have the money to support me in my old age, and I don't want it supporting other people. Give them enough cash not to starve, and give them a roof over their heads, even if it's an unpleasant one- but further than that I will not go.
