I hear ya! I recently upgraded my 2007 MBP to Lion (Apple graciously sent me a copy of Snow Leopard gratis so that I could get Lion) and I'm amazed at how smooth the move has been. No slowdowns, crashes, whatsoever. Yes, my PPC applications no longer run, but I was planning to upgrade them to the current versions anyway.
Same here except with a 2006 MBP. I debated for a long time whether I should upgrade (or buy new) or not as I was still on Leopard but I am accustomed to using MobileMe and needed to transition to the iCloud with my MBP, an iMac, 2 iPhones, an iPod Touch, and an iPad. I was certain I was going to screw something up.

I had to upgrade the RAM and upgrade the MBP to Snow Leopard, then Lion. In the end, I ended up freeing up some hard disk space unexpectedly. The computer fan comes on less often. And, although applications seemed to take a long time to load the first time, they are snappy after that. The machine is noticeably faster than before. A very pleasant surprise.

Now, it still had the original battery so I have ordered a new one. For about $150, I will have a "new" laptop computer.

Try that with a 6 year old Windows laptop.
