Maine's elected government passed a law to legalize gay marriage, which was overturned by referendum. Gay marriage has been banned by statute or constitutional amendment everywhere to my knowledge where the issue has been put to the referendum.

It was pointed out to Jay Severin that Maine made the count 32 states.

Washington State will have gay marriage next month by legislative fiat.

I believe there will be a referendum on the ballot in November to overturn the bill.
