I checked out the specs. Here's the UK version with the 1.6 liter TDI diesel that gets 78.5mpg highway.

volkswagen.co.uk

The US website doesn't offer the 1.6 liter engine. You can only get the 2.0 liter TDI "clean" diesel listed at 40mpg highway.

vw.com

Looks like he has a legitimate beef. Probably EPA regs causing this. I guess it's "dirty" diesel for the 1.6 liter version.

Except for the fact that it doesn't meet the dialogue of a clean energy solution to big oil. If the general public knew that big oil could provide the fuel for a much more efficient vehicle, the whole alt. energy business goes bye bye.

I doubt this story. If they were getting this kind of mileage, we would have them, with this Admin.

It exists alright, and is readily available in Europe.
It has a 1.6 liter engine, 105 horsepower and gets 78MPG highway.

That is in rounded numbers about 2x the horsepower and 2x the mileage of the average American motorcycle.
