<My point, since you still cannot grasp it, was that if more people knew they could get X mpg from a diesel vehicle, they would abandon the alternative fuel industry in America.> No they wouldn't and haven't.

There is no secret to the idea that diesel engines are more thermodynamically efficient than petrol, which in common lingo means more miles per gallon and even per kilogram. You can probably go out and buy diesel cars right now in the USA. Sure enough - there are diesel cars available. Here they are and some good explanation on the issues about selecting them in the USA: practicalenvironmentalist.com

The success of diesel in Europe is because petrol is taxed so heavily whereas diesel is not. In the USA, fuel taxes are much lower, which is why petrol aka gasoline is so cheap at only $4 a gallon [US gallon]. In England, it's 140p per litre = NZ$2.80 which in real money [giggle] = US$2.20 = US$9 per US gallon. That's why Europeans choose little diesel cars to drive. They get more bang for their buck. At $US9 per gallon you might find more interest in diesel in the USA too.

You are right about this part but it's not just "greenies" < Only problem is the solution still involves using oil and 'big oil' that every greenie hates.> Probably most people "hate" Big Oil but for socialist envy reasons and cultural bias about John D Rockefeller, "robber barons" and such thinking, not to mention buying petrol is a distress purchase, not a fun purchase like buying wine. Add in the Green mantras and the desire for alternative fuels has a lot of political support, whether it's rational or not. Alternative fuels are promoted as a magical kind of holy grail.
