You'd really expect the right, who are so suspicious of government ineptitude, to be more cautious about the death penalty than they are. They often celebrate it; joke about it (like the Shrub)- but for folks who don't think the government can educate people, they are certainly pretty sure that it can kill them properly. I find that a bizarre instance cognitive dissonance. It's certainly not the only instance of cognitive dissonance- there are a lot of those emanating from the right, but it's a huge one.

I actually like the government. It does a lot of things adequately- but like any large organization, it makes mistakes, and for that reason I don't want it killing citizens of this country. It's bad enough we let if off the leash to kill people in other countries -something which should be a good deal rarer than it is- but again, the wingnuts seem to have a blindspot for the military. The government does nothing so fabulously, in their opinion, as when it's killing- and in that case they seem to get a real boner for government.
