I posted this on the Commandant of Cadets Facebook page, asking if it was accurate. I sure hope this is wrong. Lane Hall, especially, is an historic building. I'll follow up if I hear anything.

Here is the Commandant's reply on Facebook:

Commandant, Corps of Cadets, Virginia Tech
Thanks for your note, Greg. The university is planning to engage in a design competition on how to meet the needs of a modern, growing Corps on the Upper Quad. We are looking at how best to manage the preservation of Lane Hall while seeking opportunities for expansion for such things as a Corps Museum, classrooms, and the staffs of both the Corps and the ROTCs. With regards to residence halls, we already are expecting to exceed the number of normal bedspaces on the Upper Quad this fall! That fact, coupled with the significant deterioration of the existing structures means the architects will have to take a hard look at what is possible in the geographic area of the Upper Quad while preserving key attributes like the V-T, etc. Our cadets deserve decent places to live and work and we are hopeful that the competition will yield ideas that enable us to honor the past while building for the future.
