I had very few relatives here before 1948 so can't blame 'us'. One of the first to jump ship and come here, a great uncle, was on one of the rescue boats that helped save people on the Titanic in 1912 but they all lived in the NE. We all made it being the last in immigrant wave from Europe post WW 2, Jews and the holocaust was a tragedy beyond comprehension but they made it, Asians continue to be an incredible success story even though after Pearl Harbor it was a struggle for a generation, Caribbeans are making it against all odds and many blacks thankfully are making it too. Just if everybody stopped using slavery that happened hundreds of years ago and segregation 50+ years ago in the south as excuses the black hoods would turn around much faster IMHO John, no other race or ethnic group has had to go through what blacks have had to go through to move up the ladder in this country.....maybe with the notable exception of Native Americans. No other group was enslaved for centuries. Have you ever read how blacks were transported from Africa to the US? I suggest you do........it brings new meaning to the term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. No other group was discriminated against as brutally as blacks were for over a century. As late as the 1960s, there were city covenants defining where blacks could not live. There were entire black neighborhoods where if you were black, you could not get a mortgage.......it was called redlining. In the South, blacks had to stay at the back of the bus and could not use the same facilities as whites. When schools were integrated, the whites left the cities, nearly destroying many American cities. That left many black schools at the bottom of the heap.......with the lowest quality materials and books. Most white universities would not allow blacks on their campus. If you don't think that left significant scars on the black psyche, then you are kidding yourself. Its BS if you think being Irish or German and emigrating to the US from Ireland or Germany was the same experience. It was not. To this day, the epitome of beauty in this country is white or a white derivative. The proper way to speak is to speak white. The proper way to dress is to dress white. White males are at the top of the food chain and right below them are white women. To be white in this country is to not understand white privilege......esp white male privilege.......and to be more specific...........white, straight male privilege. I know because I struggle with the concept every day. And if you don't think every black kid growing up in this country knows exactly what I am talking about, then you are kidding yourself. Whites would not tolerate for one second what happens to black teens every day in the ghetto were it happening to white teens. And yet, they turn the other way when its a black teen. What has caused blacks and black culture to turn around is leveling the playing field and stopping discrimination. Since 1968, we have seen the accelerated growth of a black middle class; black leaders who are articulate and educated; Atlanta becoming Hotlanta and the black alternative to Hollywood; black captains of industry; a growing black professional class and blacks moving from the cities to the suburbs. This is significant progress not seen previously. I am not making excuses for blacks...........I am just making an honest inventory of their historic reality. And it ain't pretty.
