Ok, what companies? Being somewhat in a research mood, I went looking for the source of the report that allegedly had in vitro meat being produced for only twice what chicken costs. Check out the website of the "In Vitro Meat Consortion", invitromeat.org , for signs of commercial interest, or just life in general for that matter. The last update in the publicity section is that garbled wikipedia article, the one before that is a newspaper article from 2009. I'm thinking this is one of those hypotheticals that appeals to certain popular science writers because of the brave new world angle, but is otherwise not particularly noteworthy.
