That reminds me of a story I read a week or so ago...

Spry 91-year-old chases B.C. thief into waiting arms of the law

Wrong place, wrong time, wrong victim.

A would-be thief who decided a 91-year-old woman with a walker was a good robbery target Tuesday got more than she bargained for.

At the Metrotown mall food court in Burnaby, B.C., Helen left her purse on her walker, looked away for a second and her purse was gone.

"I surprised her — I jumped up," the spry nonagenarian, who requested her last name not be used, told the Vancouver Province on Wednesday.

"I just thought, 'Oh, no you don't — I want that back.'

"I don't like people touching my personal stuff."

Leaving her walker in her wake, Helen chased the younger woman, almost 50 years her junior.

"She had her on laser-lock, and she was yelling, 'Stop that woman! She stole my purse!'" said an awestruck Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk.

"This is almost made for Hollywood."

The 42-year-old suspect figured she could outrun the agitated senior — no such luck.

"She was faced with a wall of the law," chortled Helen.

The thief's getaway was halted in short order — Cpl. Gary Graham Gock and a huddle of fellow officers were gathered in the mall for a Burnaby RCMP Community Forum.

"She ran into a hornet's nest," said Gock. "It's basically a cop convention.

"We should give her the Dumbest Crook Award."

Gresiuk said the community forum was put on hold for some real-life community policing, as the thief was handcuffed and taken away.

"This is what we signed on for," said the corporal. "You want to talk about public safety and public engagement — this is it."

Helen said the theft happened so fast she didn't see it, and doesn't know how she summoned the strength to chase after the thief.

"I jumped up and went after her. I left behind my walker and all my stuff. I just wanted to get her.

"It made me realize how fast and how smooth and how clever they are."

Elissa Joe, 42, of Surrey, B.C., was charged with theft under $5,000.

On her longevity:

"I'm 91, and 92 in August.

"Walking is great — it keeps your brain going, as well as your body.

"I always like to stop and talk to an intelligent dog."

On her daily routine:

"I go to bed between 2 and 4 in the morning."

"I'm always seven minutes late for meals."

"I do take a few risks."

On her Apple laptop (she was at the Metrotown mall to learn more about it):

"I'm not that good at it. It's a mine of information, and I can do various things."

"My nephew lives in Silicon Valley — he writes programs. I don't understand that. If I get too adventurous, I get stuck."

After the robbery:

"They asked me if I wanted an ambulance. I said, 'Heavens, no.'

"They asked me if I needed a ride home, but I said I would take the SkyTrain and the bus.

"But they did drive me home."
