"The demise of the draft was a big building block in the demise of America."

I don't find many people who believe that but I agree with you completely.

The demise of the draft was a big building block in the demise of America.

I've always leaned towards mandatory service for two years.. not necessarily military (it's not for everyone), but mandatory service of some type, to include Peace Corps.

The draft was full of exemptions, and that's not fair.. I believe there should be no exemptions for all able-bodied individuals. But I'm flexible if such service occurs in their home towns, for those who get in a "family way" at a young age.
