What your chart does not show is the inflation caused by the expanding money supply which is caused by printing dollars to meet the federal spending. So, your chart shows really small debts and deficits for 1979 when inflation was greater than 12% and interest rates were greater than 18%.

Obama could balance the budget today if he is willing to have Ben print an extra trillion dollars each year.
Or, print 16 trillion dollars and wipe out the entire federal debt.

Amazing eh? I love that site. They always have really good charts and graphs that prove the GOP is full of shit. I used that to great effect to discredit the GOP members of these and other threads, when Bush was in power.

Unfortunately, that chart also proves my point about Obama. He's no Clinton, my friend. Of course, he has it much harder than Clinton did. However, Obama's policies aren't helping. They are making things worse.
